The Top Ten Signs and Symptoms of Parasites!

It’s one of my favorite topics, one I get a little bit weirdly excited about.

When I talk about “parasites”, I’m talking about the intestinal parasites.  The little parasites that could be hanging out in your guts at this very moment.

They’re a bit gross.  And a common cause of digestive issues.

Let’s start with what a parasite is.

A parasite, put simply, is an organism that is living on or in another organism.  And benefits by getting it’s nutrients off the host.

I mentioned getting a lil’ crazy around the full moon?

Maybe you’ve heard the saying “Must be full moon, the crazies are out?!”.

Often around full moon the prisons tend to be really full.

The hospitals’ emergency departments are always overflowing on full moon.

It’s a real thing.

The word lunar refers to the moon.  Where does the word lunatic come from?  From the word lunar!

What’s happening here is that on the full moon the parasites detach from the intestinal walls to lay their eggs.  And while they’re doing this, they release endotoxins (toxins on the inside) and these endotoxins can travel up, cross the blood/brain barrier, get into your brain and make you feel a little crazy!

Ew.

Whenever I hear someone comment, “Oh, I get really funny around the full moon”, I’m quietly thinking how much I’d love to treat them for parasites!

Also, if you think of toddlers, often they’ll be a bit more of a handful around full moon.  Toddlers are always putting things in their mouths, things that could be contaminated with parasites.

How do you pick up parasites?

The most common parasite picked up in the tropics is Roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides).

It’s most commonly transmitted through infected food and water.

But parasites can be picked up as easily as walking barefoot over grass.  One time!

Or by touching the door handle after someone that has them.

Or by having ice in your drink that was made with unfiltered water.

Or washing your veggies / brushing your teeth with tap water.

It’s THAT easy.

So let’s get into it.

Top Ten Signs and Symptoms of Worms in Humans:

1. You have diarrhoea, constipation, gas or any other IBS-type symptom

IBS = Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Especially if the symptoms can’t be explained by anything else.

2.  You’ve traveled abroad and you can remember having a bout gastro

A little bout where everything was coming out of the bottom end, or the top end, or even both ends at the same time.

Bali Belly, Delhi Belly, Montezuma’s Revenge, Turkey Trots, Rancoon Runs, Hong Kong Dog.

Whatever you want to call it “traveler’s diarrhoea”, or “traveler’s sickness” can spark off a little infestation of parasites.

3.  A food poisoning episode and you haven’t been the same since

I remember a time I had food poisoning many years ago.   It was when I was living in England.  I still remember the exact street, I remember that it was cold, I remember I was wearing a scarf and a fabulous black jacket.

I’d had a chicken burger from Burger King (no judgement, this was in my teens) and as I was eating it, I remember thinking the mayonnaise tasted a little bit funny, or the chicken tasted a little bit funny, but I ate it anyway because I was really hungry.

I swear I turned green within half an hour and then it was just all over for the next 24 hours.

Food poisoning usually lasts around 24 hours, so that can give you an idea if it’s more of a virus or a bacteria.

Gross.

4.  You have trouble falling asleep at night and you wake multiple times during the night.

The parasites, bugs and worms are more active at night time.

If you notice that you have an itchy anus at night time, that can be the worms coming out.  Really!

I’ve never personally seen it, but I’ve heard of parents spotting them in their children!

5.  Itchy skin

I had this one.  It kind of felt like my whole skin was tingling and prickling.  The skin is very much related to the digestive system.

You can also get things like eczema, you can get hives, maybe  even dermatitis. You can get weird little red rashes.

This is often coming from the inside.  Not always.  Sometimes it can be contact dermatitis where something you’ve put on has caused it, but very often it’s coming from your digestive system.

6. You grind your teeth at night

If you wake up in the morning and you’re all clenched up, or maybe you’ve got someone sleeping next to you and they comment that you tend to grind your teeth at night, that could be parasites too.

…there is another explanation, sometimes it can be deficiency of magnesium.

Magnesium helps to relax the muscles and then calcium contracts it, so if you don’t have the right balance between the calcium and magnesium, you can end up with muscle spasms and contractions if you don’t have enough magnesium to relax them.

So if you don’t have enough magnesium in your body, you can wake up with a really clenched jaw.

But otherwise parasites…

7.  Unexplained muscle pain and joint pain

I had this one too.

At the time I was teaching yoga, practicing my own yoga and surfing most days.   Very active.  Very fit.

But I’d wake up in the morning so sore, and it would take me at least half an hour to get my body moving and release that morning stiffness.

I was also a lot less flexible than usual.  I’m usually very bendy, and can get myself in all sorts of pretzel positions.  But when I had parasites I could hardly even reach my toes.   Very humbling as a yoga instructor.

That loss of flexibility, the all over body soreness and morning stiffness can often indicate parasites.

If more localised to certain joints, Osteoarthritis could be another explanation.   Especially if it’s in one hand but not the other, then I think more wear and tear osteoarthritis.

But if it’s all over and everything just hurts, could be parasites.

8. You’re tired, tired all the time

You’ve got brain fog.

You might be feeling feelings of apathy where you just can’t be bothered with anything.

You don’t want to get out of bed.

Kind of like you’re walking through mud…this can be due to parasites too.

They aren’t very nice.  They get first dibs on our food.  They take our nutrients.  And then they also release toxins in our digestive system and these toxins (endotoxins) can cross the blood/brain barrier, which can mess around with our mental function.

Sitting in a meeting and your brain just wont kick into gear?   Could be parasites.

9.  You never feel satisfied after meals

And why would you, the parasites are getting all your nutrients!

So your body goes into semi-starvation mode.

You may be putting the food in, but because the nutrients aren’t getting into the cells your body becomes malnourished.

And hungry!

10. You might have iron deficiency anaemia

This can also be true for SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) too.   And I often see it with both.

Iron is one of their favourite nutrients.   They feed on it.

Iron deficiency anaemia could also be another reason you’re tired all the time.   We need the iron to make the hemoglobin, we need the hemoglobin to transport the oxygen to the cells, we need oxygen in the cells for energy.

Even if you’re supplementing with iron you could still end up anaemic.  Taking oral doses will hit the digestive system, and if the bacteria and/or parasites are in there they’re going to nab it first.

And that’s them.  The top 10 signs and symptoms of intestinal parasites.

If you connect with any of those I’d encourage you to watch the video above where I go into different testing you can do.

I also mention a few of my favourite herbs to use for killing off parasites.  And then what you might want to consider to prevent them re-infesting.

Don’t ignore them!

If you leave them in there they’ll just grow and grow and grow.

I’ve seen some horror vids on YouTube where they had to perform surgery to remove parasites that had completely blocked up the digestive system.

Full. On.
